Dragonflies in Flight
Dragonflies in flight are small tests of patience, technique and nerves. This series brings together the moments when countless failed attempts finally become an image.
Photographing dragonflies in flight sounds easier than it is. They constantly change direction, rarely remain on the same plane for long and usually disappear from the viewfinder faster than you can react.
That is exactly what makes these subjects so appealing to me. A good in-flight photograph can rarely be planned. It is the result of observation, recurring flight paths, a great many rejects and one brief moment when the dragonfly is exactly where the focus and composition need it to be.
Between Focus and Flight Path
For in-flight shots, it helps to observe the dragonfly's flight path for a while first. Many individuals patrol recurring routes or hover in almost the same spot for fractions of a second.
The camera does not just need to be fast. The key is to anticipate the right point. Autofocus gets only one chance, and the background is often just as important as the animal itself.
Ongoing Series
This series will continue to grow. Dragonflies in flight remain one of those subjects with a low success rate—but that is exactly what makes every successful image all the more rewarding.
